Russian troops took control of the village of Zakitne in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region, the Defence Ministry said on January 16. Reuters could not independently verify the battlefield report.

A Russian attack on Kyiv on January 24 killed one person and injured four, Kyiv mayor Vitalii Klitschko said on Telegram. Firefighters extinguished burning trucks set ablaze by the strike, while the attack also damaged the roof of the Roshen chocolate factory.

Russia launched waves of air strikes against Ukraine's two largest cities Kyiv and Kharkiv early on January 24, with one person killed and at least 23 injured. Russian drones and missile strikes on January 26 hit Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, knocking out power to 80% of the city and surrounding region and striking apartment buildings, a school and a kindergarten, local officials said.

Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov said an "energy site" had been targeted in the city as night-time temperatures dipped to -14 degrees Celsius (7 degrees Fahrenheit). Sixteen multi-storey buildings were also damaged, he added.

In Lviv, Ukrainian authorities cordoned off a damaged building after law enforcement officers were reportedly killed and others injured during explosions in the centre of the city in Ukraine's west, police said.

The blasts happened after patrol police units arrived to the scene, according to a Telegram post by Ukrainian police.

Reuters confirmed the location of footage from the buildings, windows, road layout, and zebra crossing, which matched file and satellite imagery of the area. Reuters could not confirm the date of footage but Lviv mayor, Andriy Sadovyi posted a statement on Telegram on February 22 saying there was a "terrorist act" that killed 1 police officer and injured at least a dozen people in the city.

At least one person was killed and five were injured in the Kyiv region, with damage reported across five districts where more than a dozen houses were hit, Regional Governor Mykola Kalashnyk said on Telegram.

At least two buildings were heavily damaged in Sofiivska Borshchahivka, a suburb of Kyiv, as seen by a Reuters witness. Many homes had their windows blown out.
