STORY: Large swathes of the United States awoke to an icy white blanket Monday morning (January 26) after a powerful storm dumped over a foot of snow and ice across the country. In Montvale, New Jersey, a borough of Bergen County, a stready patrol of snow plows and salt trucks cleared snow off the streets, allowing for light traffic in the early morning. Workers were seen shoveling heavy snow piled up high on the sidewalks. Local media reported that some towns in Bergen County had received at least 16 inches of snow.
Fom New York and Massachusetts in the northeast to Texas and North Carolina in the south, roads were frozen slick with ice and buried under often more than a foot of snow.
Flights were canceled, schools were shut and volunteers staffed emergency shelters to provide warmth for the needy and homeless.
While the storm system was expected to drift away from the East Coast into the Atlantic on Monday, more Arctic air was forecast to rush in behind it, prolonging bitter cold, icy conditions over the next few days, the National Weather Service said.
