L080-SUIZA ACCIDENTE TREN
Five people were injured after a train derailed in the Swiss Alps near the town of Goppenstein on Monday (February 16) police said.
An initial investigation revealed that an avalanche may have hit the rail tracks before the train passed, the Valais cantonal police said in a statement.
One of those hurt was taken to hospital in the nearby town of Sion, while the others were treated on site, the Valais police statement said.
The train line linked the towns of Goppenstein and Hohtenn in the Valais canton.
The 29 people on board were evacuated to Goppenstein and then by bus to the town of Gampel at the foot of the valley, Valais canton police spokesperson Daniel Imboden said.
