A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck Colombia's Pacific Coast on Monday (August 10), leaving at least 20 buildings collapsed in Cali with people trapped inside, according to the city's mayor.

Alejandro Eder said he had requested rescue teams from Bogota and Medellin to assist with emergency operations and urged residents to evacuate buildings showing structural damage.

Colombia's geological service reported the quake's epicenter was near San Jose del Palmar at a depth of 96 kilometers. The earthquake was felt as far as the capital Bogota and across the border in Venezuela, which experienced devastating twin quakes in June that killed more than 6,000 people.

The U.S. tsunami warning system said there was no tsunami threat, while Colombia's disaster management agency worked with local authorities to assess damage.
