Rescue workers and residents scrambled atop a collapsed building in Cali on Monday (August 10) after a powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake tore through Colombia's Pacific coast, leaving streets littered with debris and building facades crumbling across the region.

Reuters footage from the scene showed people climbing over the rubble of the collapsed structure, searching through the debris as emergency crews assessed the damage. Nearby, other buildings in the city stood visibly damaged, their walls cracked and facades stripped away by the force of the tremor.

Colombia's geological service revised the earthquake's magnitude upward to 7.4, with a depth of 96 kilometres (60 miles) — deeper than the 79 km initially reported. The U.S. tsunami warning system confirmed no tsunami threat had been issued.

The earthquake comes just two months after devastating twin quakes struck Venezuela in June, killing more than 6,000 people, underscoring the seismic vulnerability of the region.
