“I tried by myself (to put out the fire) I did what I could, and luckily I saved the house.”

“(It was) frightening. I was afraid, but because I have two doors, and one of the doors led towards the sea, I thought, if something happens I will jump into the sea.”

“Yes they were my neighbours and they were elderly. I think because her husband walked very slowly they did not have time to leave.”

“There is so much adrenaline you don’t have time to be afraid or feel anything, you look to save what you can.”

“We go from house to house, to see if there are any relatives, if someone needs help. At that particular house (where the couple died) there was not anyone. And we continue to the rest of the houses.”

16. (SOUNDBITE)(Greek) HELLENIC RED CROSS NURSE ZOI MAROULI, 28, SAYING:

“We try to come into contact with those affected, with permanent residents and others to inform them of the safety measures they have to take after the tragic event. We try to provide first aid to whoever needs it, with masks, and what the affected might need, and of course social workers provide mental health first aid.”

“We were sleeping with our two dogs and I got up to get some water and I see smoke. I go outside and my neighbour says, ‘Andreas come outside we have a fire up top, and I see a fire 50 metres away, over 30 metres high and I don’t know how wide, and it was coming down with a force.”

“I was calm, my goal was to save those with me, my wife and my two dogs, that was my concern, and to get to the beach with our cars so we could get away. After that I did not care if it all burned.”

“At least we have our house, others lost their homes. Others died or were burned. A woman up there, whose house burned, has burns on her legs and hands because she did not get away in time.Compared to what happened to them, (what I went through) is nothing.”
