Palestinians held funeral processions for the journalists and others who were killed in the two Israeli strikes on Nasser Medical Complex on Monday, August 25.

Cameraman Hussam al-Masri, a Reuters contractor, was killed in the first strike, according to the officials. Photographer Hatem Khaled, who was also a Reuters contractor, was wounded in a second strike on the hospital, they said.

"We are devastated to learn of the death of Reuters contractor Hussam al-Masri and injuries to another of our contractors, Hatem Khaled, in Israeli strikes on the Nasser hospital in Gaza today," a Reuters spokesperson said in a statement.

Health officials in Gaza named the three other journalists as Mariam Abu Dagga, who the Associated Press said freelanced for the AP and other outlets since the start of the Gaza conflict, Mohammed Salama, who Qatar-based Al Jazeera said worked for the broadcaster, and Moaz Abu Taha. A rescue worker was also among those killed, the health officials added.

Israel struck Nasser hospital in the south of the Gaza Strip on Monday (August 25), killing at least 20 people, including five journalists who worked for Reuters, the Associated Press, Al Jazeera and others.

Cameraman Hussam al-Masri, a Reuters contractor, was killed near a live broadcasting position operated by Reuters on an upper floor just below the roof of the hospital in Khan Younis in an initial strike, according to Palestinian health officials.

Officials at the hospital and witnesses said Israel then struck the site a second time, killing other journalists, as well as rescue workers and medics, who had rushed to the scene to help.

The journalists killed included Mariam Abu Dagga, who freelanced for the Associated Press and other outlets, Mohammed Salama, who worked for Qatar-based broadcaster Al Jazeera, Moaz Abu Taha, a freelance journalist who worked with several news organisations including occasionally contributing to Reuters, and Ahmed Abu Aziz.

Permission to publish the photographs of Mariam Abu Dagga, Mohammed Salama and Moaz Abu Taha was given by those who did not want to be identified.

Photographer Hatem Khaled, also a Reuters contractor, was wounded.

8. SCREENGRAB OF STATEMENT FROM THE ASSOCIATED PRESS, READING (English):

"The Associated Press is shocked and saddened to learn of the death of visual journalist Mariam Dagga, along with several other journalists, at the Nassar Hospital in Khan Younis, Gaza. Mariam regularly based herself at the hospital for coverage. Her recent work included strong stories of starving and malnourished children in Gaza. She freelanced for the AP and other news outlets. We are doing everything we can to keep our journalists in Gaza safe as they continue to provide crucial eyewitness reporting in difficult and dangerous conditions."

WHO chief demands end to attacks on health care after Gaza hospital hit

10. X POST BY DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION, TEDROS ADHANOM GHEBREYESUS READING (English):

".@WHO received reports of two strikes on the Nasser Medical Complex this morning, resulting in the deaths of at least 20 people, including four health workers and fiver journalists. Fifty others were injured, among them critically ill patients who were already receiving care.

The hospital's main building, which houses the emergency department, inpatient ward, and surgical unit, was hit. The strike damaged the emergency staircase.

While people in #Gaza are being starved, their already limited access to health care is being further crippled by repeated attacks.

We cannot say loudly enough: STOP attacks on health care. Ceasefire now!"

12. POST ON X SOCIAL MEDIA WEBSITE BY DURAN REACTING TO ANADOLU AGENCY STORY ON ISRAELI ATTACK ON NASSER HOSPITAL IN GAZA

13. X POST BY DURAN READING (Turkish): "Israel has added yet another one to its crimes against humanity and war crimes. Press freedom and human values have once again been targeted, under the shadow of genocide, amidst the agonised cries of the innocent. Israel, which persists in its tyranny without regard for any humanitarian or legal principle, operates under the delusion that it can prevent the truth from being reported through its systematic attacks on journalists. It is bent on annihilating a nation under blockade and genocide. It is imperative that everyone with a conscience, the international community, and organisations now raise their voices louder and halt this genocide—which go down as a dark chapter in human history—as soon as possible. Humanity can no longer bear this heavy burden of guilt. I pray to God for mercy upon the slain members of the press and our Palestinian brothers and sisters. I salute with respect all members of the press who are striving to bring the tyranny in Gaza to the world's attention at the cost of their lives."

15. POST ON X SOCIAL MEDIA WEBSITE BY MEMISOGLU, REACTING TO ISRAELI ATTACK ON NASSER HOSPITAL IN GAZA

16. X POST BY MEMISOGLU, READING (Turkish): "What sort of conscience could possibly deem the bombing of a hospital to be legitimate? We strongly condemn the targeting of Nasser Hospital in Gaza by Israeli forces. We categorically reject the bombing of hospitals where people seek healing, the injured cling to life, and children regain their health. Systematic attacks on health facilities are not only a blatant violation of international humanitarian law but also an assault on the shared values of humanity. These attacks disregard the right to life; they target health workers and innocent civilians. We call upon the international community to take immediate action to halt these inhumane attacks, to enforce international legal standards, and to ensure the safety of health personnel and facilities. To those who lost their lives in this tragic incident, we pray for mercy from God, and we extend our condolences and patience to their families and loved ones. We share in the pain of our brothers and sisters in Gaza. Turkey will always stand by the oppressed and continue to be a defender of humanitarian values."

Press freedom group Reporters Without Borders (RSF) on Monday (August 25) urged for a robust international response after four journalists, including a Reuters contractor, were killed in an Israeli airstrike on Gaza's Nasser hospital.

16. (SOUNDBITE) (English) REPORTERS WITHOUT BORDERS (RSF) DIRECTOR GENERAL, THIBAUT BRUTTIN, SAYING:

“When and where is it going to end? Are we going to let the Israel Defence Forces continue the repeated killing of journalists? There is international law. There are guarantees that should be granted to journalists covering conflicts, and none of that seems to be applying. So we need to be very clear about the fact that none of the journalists that are allegedly terrorists are terrorists. They are professional journalists working for legacy professional media, like for example Reuters, or for example AP."

17. VARIOUS MAP OF STATE OF PRESS FREEDOM

18. (SOUNDBITE) (English) REPORTERS WITHOUT BORDERS (RSF) DIRECTOR GENERAL, THIBAUT BRUTTIN, SAYING:

“A suicide drone hit the third floor of the hospital, and this third floor was reputedly known for being a space where journalists work. So there is already a first indication that it might have been a targeted strike. But eight minutes after, while the emergency services and other journalists were stepping in to help, there was a second blast. So this is a very shocking situation.”
