L046-FRANCIA ENTREVISTA MACRON ESTRECHO ORMUZ

EVIAN-LES-BAINS, FRANCE

France and Britain are ready to lead a mission in the Strait of Hormuz with the support of the Netherlands and Italy to help re-opening the sea lane after the deal agreed upon by the United States and Iran becomes a reality, French President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday (June 15).

The mission could be deployed within two or three days following the confirmation of the deal, Macron added, also saying applying tolls would be against international law.

Oil prices fell on the news, though shippers remained cautious, and ensuring the waterway is clear of mines could take weeks. Brent crude futures fell some 5% on Monday while stock markets jumped.

Macron also said his country will not yield to U.S. President Donald Trump's threat to apply 100% tariffs on French wine unless Paris eliminates its digital tax on American tech giants.

"This digital tax, decided by Europeans, implemented by several countries, is part of our law," Macron said in an interview on French TV channel TF1. "It's not the United States that decides on the Europeans' law."

2. (SOUNDBITE) (French) FRENCH PRESIDENT, EMMANUEL MACRON, SAYING:

“This agreement is a good thing, because it is what we have been calling for for weeks. First, we are going to do everything and mobilise ourselves starting this evening, within the framework of our work, and tomorrow as well, since we will not simply have the members of the G7, which are the seven major democratic economies in the world - we have brought in partners, and tomorrow, we will have a session on the question of Iran, with in particular Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. We are first going to do everything so that this agreement becomes a reality and therefore so that Hormuz can reopen in a peaceful manner and that traffic can resume."

4. (SOUNDBITE) (French) FRENCH PRESIDENT, EMMANUEL MACRON, SAYING:

“We have built a mission with the British. We are in the region, there are several nations that are there - the Dutch, the Italians, the British, us. We are ready to act very quickly. To do what? Send planes, send a frigate, send minesweepers. And we also have our aircraft carrier, the Charles de Gaulle, with everything that surrounds it which remains in the area and which can be deployed in the two-three days that will follow the confirmation. And therefore, what we are going to do with the Americans, in parallel with the Iranians, is ensure this deployment so that this reopening of Hormuz can take place in a peaceful manner and that it lasts."

5. (SOUNDBITE) (French) INTERVIEWER, MARIE SOPHIE LACCARAU, SAYING (AUDIO STARTS ON PREVIOUS SHOT):

“Will this reopening take place without tolls? The Iranian press seems to say that no, they will be there with the agreement of the United States."

6. (SOUNDBITE) (French) FRENCH PRESIDENT, EMMANUEL MACRON, SAYING:

“That is obviously not at all what we want because it would create a precedent. There are many other straits in the world. If each time we make people pay, what is the consequence? You drive up prices for the entire world. So there, we will also discuss it. It is not in accordance with international law. So we defend international law, and we will do everything so that there are no tolls. Today, they are playing on words, they say that they are for services. So we will see. The priority is to reopen (the strait)."

7. (SOUNDBITE) (French) FRENCH PRESIDENT, EMMANUEL MACRON, SAYING (STARTS ON WIDE SHOT OF MACRON AND LACCARAU AT TABLE):

“What we are being told is that normally, it should start again now. So, vigilance. The next hours will tell us if the first ships will cross it. Everything must be done in the hours, the days to come, so that this becomes a reality. The second thing is that the international community, and therefore us, should ensure that this is a reality that lasts. The third thing is that we should ensure that there are no tolls, (that) prices do not rise, and that - we will discuss this tomorrow - we find an agreement. And then in parallel, it is important so that it is also well understood, in the work that we are going to conduct in this G7, we will do everything to reduce our dependence on this strait."

LACCARAU: "That is to say?"

"To find other routes. When you have gas that is produced in Iraq, today it goes out via this strait (of Hormuz). It is to ensure that there are pipelines that go across Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and that come out somewhere else.

8. (SOUNDBITE) (French) FRENCH PRESIDENT, EMMANUEL MACRON, SAYING (STARTS AND ENDS ON WIDE SHOT OF MACRON AND LACCARAU AT TABLE):

“We need to ensure that Lebanon regains peace, that there are no more bombings, that foreign troops withdraw and that we restore to the Lebanese armed forces the possibility of regaining what is called the monopoly of arms, and therefore, disarm Hezbollah in the right order. And then the third thing, and it is in the agreement what will be done over the 60 days to come, is the agreement on nuclear, but also what are called ballistic capabilities, that is to say the long-range strikes that the Iranians can carry out. That is important for peace in the region, it is important for us."

9. (SOUNDBITE) (French) FRENCH PRESIDENT, EMMANUEL MACRON, SAYING:

“We have just concluded an agreement between Europe and the United States on tariffs. After months of negotiations, it had been finalised last summer. Now, stability is needed. What we will also show, what expert reports show, is that tariffs are good for no one, and especially tariffs between G7 countries. And that does not do any good to the economic sectors that are affected in our countries, but it does not do any good to the United States of America either, because it does not resolve their trade problems at all and it increases certain prices. So there, this digital tax, decided by Europeans, implemented by several countries, is part of our law. It's not the United States that decides on the law of Europeans or the French."
