Firefighters and volunteers battled a forest fire that broke out on Sunday (September 13) in Quito, Ecuador, near a residential area.

According an X post by the Quito Fire Department, the emergency prompted the deployment of nearly 60 firefighters and 14 fire vehicles. A helicopter was also seen operating in the area.

Residents living near the fire were not currently in danger, Quito Fire Commander Esteban Cardenas told Reuters, though he added that firefighters were continuing efforts to contain part of the blaze.

Residents used hoses, buckets and water bottles to help stop the fire alongside emergency crews in the area.

No deceased or injured have been reported.

"When we arrived here we saw that everything was a single cloud of smoke, as you can see, this is a passage, the moment when all the smoke arrived, you could not see anything, people were suffocating, the people up there, from the house up there, tried to take out as many belongings as possible, because the fire was already here."

"Fortunately, at this moment we have managed to contain the entire north side facing La Vicentina (sector), there is no longer any risk for the population in this area, but we still have a fire line with crown fires in the lower part that are still causing us complications."
