"Almost four years ago, the citizens bestowed on us the honor and the mandate to lead the destiny of the nation. Those were difficult times, coming out of a pandemic in the midst of a deep institutional crisis, with an economy that had been hit hard and with a series of problems that it is neither necessary nor the moment to go into detail about now. But I want to tell you that on March 11, we will hand over a country that is moving forward, a country with tremendous potential, of which everyone has the right to be proud and to feel a part."

17. (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) CHILEAN PRESIDENT, GABRIEL BORIC, SAYING:
"To those who today are happy and celebrating, my congratulations, my sincere congratulations. To those who today feel sorrow, who are sad or uncertain, I also want to say that there are many reasons to keep working for our homeland, and we will always, always be together in that. Above all, we are one country, Chile belongs to everyone, and we have a common destiny that cannot exclude those who think differently. We are a collective story and project that is diverse and plural, that has shared principles and values, and that also has differences which must always be resolved by peaceful means, through dialogue and democracy, and which is built and renewed in days like today."
Kast addressed supporters and promised to be the president of all Chileans and restore law and order, amid celebrations. (9698-CHILE-ELECTION/KAST-REACTION-UPDATE)

"I have to be very honest from day one: there are no magic solutions here, everything does not change from one day to the next, and you know that very well. What can happen is that, day by day, things can start getting better instead of worse, which is what we have seen in many areas of our democracy."
