President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday (September 21) welcomed a new chapter in ties with Canada after the two countries agreed to forge deeper ties with the French leader saying bilateral talks were opening to see how Ottawa could help Europe with more energy support.

"Canadian liquefied natural gas projects can help. They are important for Europe and will help open up new opportunities between our two countries," Macron said, speaking alongside Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney during a visit to the French territory of Saint Pierre and Miquelon, off the coast of Canada.

"We have also begun bilateral discussions with the prime minister on very concrete projects," Macron added.

Carney called for stronger ties with France in the face of new global threats.

France and Canada have tasked their space agencies and defence ministries to jointly develop space launch systems and ground reception facilities, Carney also said.
