Sydney, Australia

STORY: Mourners of the Jewish community said that they felt "shattered" as they paid tribute to the victims of the Bondi shooting, in Sydney, on Monday (December 15).

"We are a heartbroken community. We feel absolutely shattered. We feel that we've been abandoned, that we've been struggling to get to a place where we feel comfortable and we feel safe here. We don't feel safe," said Avril Kahn, 73, a grandmother.

Australia signalled plans for tougher gun laws on Monday as the country began mourning victims of its worst mass shooting in almost 30 years, in which a father and son duo killed 15 people at a Jewish celebration at Sydney's Bondi Beach.

The father, a 50-year-old, was killed at the scene, taking the number of dead to 16, while his 24-year-old son was in critical condition in hospital, police said at a press conference on Monday.

Forty people were taken to hospital following the attack, including two police officers who are in serious but stable condition, police said. The victims were aged between 10 and 87.

5. (SOUNDBITE) (English) PROGRAM MANAGER AT NIDA OPEN AND AUSTRALIAN CITIZEN, DANIELLA LACOB, SAYING:

"I think today is a... it's a very sad day. It's the day that I think we were all dreading in the Jewish community. It was a day that we had as supposed in many ways, warned government and higher authorities of the possibility and the risk. And it feels almost like we were unheard, almost invisible. And so today is the day of disbelief."

8. (SOUNDBITE) (English) CONSULTANT, LANDON KAHN, SAYING:

"Yeah. It was horrible. We were actually celebrating my nephew and her grandson's bar mitzvah. A really amazing special moment in a once in a lifetime moment. And when we found out, everyone's hearts dropped and didn't believe it was actually real, someone actually thought it was AI at first and it completely changed the vibe at the bar mitzvah. And we felt we were all there with the people. And it was just like inconceivable."

"We are a heartbroken community. We feel absolutely shattered. We feel that we've been abandoned, that we've been struggling to get to a place where we feel comfortable and we feel safe here. We don't feel safe. You know, there's always an undertone of maybe, what if, and it's not why we came to Australia. We've been here. We came from South Africa nearly 40 years ago, and we came because we felt this would give our children a better life and would be much safer. Now we feel like we'd be just left out in the cold."

12. (SOUNDBITE) (English) MOURNER, ARI SEGAL, SAYING:

"Yesterday was unprecedented in what happened and the community is just completely broken and we never thought of a place like this. My two young kids go to that exact park over there where the shooting happened, and we come here every Sunday afternoon. We had a different Hanukkah event last night, but very close by and just feel like we live in a different time now, like not in Australia that we grew up in."
