L006-MEXICO IMAGENES ALCALDE URUAPAN
STORY: A video which was streamed by Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo's team on his Facebook page showed him enjoying a candlelight Day of the Dead festival on Saturday (November 1), in the city centre of Uruapa, just before he was gunned down.
The mayor, a vocal critic of organized crime, had repeatedly requested federal protection and warned of threats to his life.
Reuters was able to confirm the location and date of the footage by reports of local authorities.
One of the few independent politicians elected to office in Mexico, Manzo had been Uruapan's mayor since September 2024.
Since taking office, Manzo, often seen wearing a bulletproof vest, had called on the federal government to do more to fight organized crime.
Uruapan has been called Mexico's avocado capital because it sits in the heart of Michoacan's avocado-growing region. The industry has seen rapid growth due to booming U.S. demand, making avocado production a target for organized criminal groups.
Multiple politicians, including other mayors, and journalists have been killed in recent months and years.
President Claudia Sheinbaum denounced the “vile” assassination on X and convened an emergency security meeting, vowing to combat impunity.
