Residents and rescue workers searched through rubble in Guinea's capital Conakry on Sunday (August 23) after a landslide at a landfill killed about 30 people, with bulldozers clearing debris and volunteers looking for bodies.

Mamadouba Bangoura, a resident who was at home when it happened, said he heard a loud noise at about 2 a.m., and went outside with relatives to see what was happening before a second wave of rubbish struck and brought down the house.

The landslide occurred at the Dar-es-Salam landfill in the Gbessia commune of Conakry, after heavy rains, destroying several homes and leaving around 30 dead and 22 injured, according to Guinea's emergency authorities. Bodies were taken to Donka hospital as rescue operations continued at the site.

Guinea's minister of territorial administration, Djenab Toure, announced on Thursday that the government was closing the landfill because of the danger it posed, especially during the ongoing rainy season, and said the waste was to be relocated outside Conakry.

"At 2 a.m., we were sleeping when we heard a loud noise. The first ones out, there were 4 or 5 people from the family who went out to see what had happened outside. They went out, suddenly we saw the first break, but the rubbish had not yet come this far. There were a lot of people outside to see what had happened. This time, the second wave (of the landslide) came. That is what knocked over, pushed the house, and it fell."

"There are around thirty dead. The bodies have been taken to Donka hospital (national hospital) and we now have 22 injured. So very early in the morning, the government mobilised all the government agencies, civil society, the Red Cross, first to search for people under the rubble. What we must be thankful for is that civil protection, together with our other services, with the support of the government, we found people, many people under the rubble, first bringing out 22 people who are truly injured, some seriously and others slightly. That is what is important, but for the other bodies the search continues."
