L006-FILIPINAS TERREMOTO
A roof collapsed at an elementary school in the Philippines on Monday (June 8) after a strong magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck off the southern island.
Footage from Mahayahay Elementary School in Digos showed students being rocked back and forth during the powerful tremor before the roof structure gave way, with staff helping to calm and evacuate the children.
Reuters was able to confirm the location from roof, stairs, storage tanker and school layout matched file and satellite imagery. Date was verified by local officials.
The Philippines' civil defence office has reported at least eight fatalities following the earthquake. The deaths are still subject to validation, the office added.
Tsunami warnings were issued in the Philippines, neighbouring Indonesia and by the U.S. Tsunami Warning System, with people in coastal areas warned to move to higher ground.
