STORYLINE:

A 5.2-magnitude earthquake that struck Liuzhou in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region early Monday has caused the collapse of nine residential houses, with two people rescued as of 01:30, local authorities said.

The quake hit Liunan District in Liuzhou at 00:21 Monday Beijing time, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC). Its epicenter was monitored at 24.38 degrees north latitude and 109.26 degrees east longitude, at a depth of eight kilometers.

Tremors were felt in the urban areas of Liuzhou, Guilin, Guigang, Wuzhou, Hechi, Nanning and Laibin.

The China Earthquake Administration initiated a Level III emergency response following the quake, while the Guangxi Earthquake Bureau activated a Level II emergency response.

Earlier reports said several self-built roadside houses had collapsed in Taiyangcun Township, near the epicenter, with cracks also found in some buildings.

Search-and-rescue operations are underway. A rescue team from the Liunan Fire Brigade, consisting of 30 personnel and four vehicles, has arrived at the scene, while additional rescuers have been dispatched.

The Guangxi Earthquake Bureau has also sent a 23-member team from the Huaxi rescue unit, one of China's national mine emergency rescue teams, to the affected area.

Professional earthquake rescue teams from fire departments in Nanning, Liuzhou, Guilin, Guigang and Laibin were mobilized following the quake, deploying a total of 51 fire engines, 315 rescue personnel and seven search dogs. Among them, a total of 90 rescuers from the Liuzhou brigade have arrived at the epicenter with 17 fire engines and three search dogs, and are carrying out search-and-rescue operations.
