L005-COLOMBIA CUMBRE UE CELAC
The CELAC-EU summit in Santa Marta concluded on Sunday (November 9) with a 52-point declaration reaffirming multilateralism and addressing global challenges, from climate change to the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, according to Colombian President Gustavo Petro and European Council President Antonio Costa.
Petro emphasized that the agreement demonstrated the ability of diverse nations to unite and find common solutions, while Costa highlighted the importance of dialogue in addressing critical issues.
The final document called for reform of the UN Security Council, a reduction in global trade tensions, and respect for international law.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas warned that Russia’s war in Ukraine remains an existential threat to Europe and a breach of international norms, urging global solidarity. The summit, marked by the absence of several key regional leaders, sought to counter rising political extremism and fragmentation.

"The first major message of this joint declaration is that we insist, persist, and deepen the principle of multilateralism, which means that diverse nations, diverse cultures—I would say diverse civilizations—come together to solve common problems, not with the intention of one nation dominating another, subordinating or imposing, but with the intention of building common solutions, even different from those we had before entering the meeting."

"Russia's war in Ukraine is an existential threat to the European Union. It is the biggest war since 1945, and if Putin is not stopped, he will not stop. Although Kyiv may seem far from Santa Marta, there is actually no further than here to the South of CELAC. This is a blatant breach of international law, sovereignty, and territorial integrity that could occur anywhere. Unchecked aggression only breeds more, and we are all responsible for standing up for international law and creating the conditions for just and lasting peace."
