"Listen to the orders recommended they're meant for your own well-being. It also helps our firefighters when they need to, you know, engage with the fire. And it's in the best interest of our residents that they have everything ready at the door or in the car and at a moment's notice can go. I know we're still early August. I remember last year we had some fires, even in September. So we're very vigilant. But, residents need to know that we are prepared."

Wildfires burned on hillsides near Summerland, British Columbia, with trees engulfed in flames as emergency vehicles responded and residents in nearby Peachland remained under evacuation orders.

Peachland Mayor Patrick van Minsel said on Sunday (August 9) that no homes had been lost in the community, but urged residents to remain patient and follow official instructions.

British Columbia declared a state of emergency on Saturday after thousands of people in the western Canadian province were ordered to flee a fast-moving wildfire that nearly doubled in size overnight.

Officials said the Bald Range wildfire triggered the largest evacuation event so far this summer and more than 20,000 people across B.C. have been forced to evacuate their homes.
