L004-VENEZUELA TESTIMONIOS VICTIMAS TERREMOTOS
Peru’s Venezuelan community rallied in support of their earthquake-hit homeland on Sunday (June 28).
A collection centre in the Lima district of Miraflores was one of 30 set up across the country to gather humanitarian aid for those left destitute by two deadly quakes that struck Venezuela in quick succession on Wednesday (June 24).
"The feeling is one of deep sadness, great concern for our families, for our brothers,” said Andres Rodriguez, a Venezuelan citizen in Lima. “But we are happy about everything that is happening with the Venezuelan community here in Peru, and how they have opened the doors for us to have a collection centre in this place.”
A team of Peruvian volunteer rescuers said on Sunday that – working alongside teams from Venezuela and El Salvador – they had succeeded in rescuing a 60-year-old woman in La Guaira after a 10-hour operation.
The coastal state was hardest-hit by the earthquakes that left at least 1,450 dead and thousands missing.
