People gathered in Syria's Aleppo on Sunday (September 13) to protest against the Syrian government's decision to increase fuel prices in the country.

Protesters burnt tyres and demanded the immediate cancellation of the decision.

The Syrian government announced on Saturday (September 12) evening that it was raising fuel and gas prices by between 20 and 40 percent depending on the commodity, following a series of price hikes in recent months, sparking public anger throughout the country.

Syria's state news agency SANA reported that the new prices, which took effect at midnight on Sunday, were temporary.

"The reason for the protest is most importantly the increase in diesel (prices), and in fuel (prices) in general... The people want, and all those present here want a reduction in diesel prices. Let your people live (addressing Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa). Your people was with you, is still with you now and will remain with you but this will let things explode."
