Typhoon Dujuan hit Japan with heavy rain on Monday (September 21), bringing strong winds and triggering landslides in the Kanto region and other parts of eastern Japan.

A woman in her 60s was trapped after about two meters of mud and debris flowed into a house in Yokosuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture, according to Japanese broadcaster NTV. Firefighters were carrying out rescue operations but were unable to immediately make contact with the woman, NTV reported.

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a Level Five Emergency Warning, the highest-level warning for flooding and landslides, in Oshima town and the Izu Islands south of Tokyo.

An evacuation order covering 1.67 million residents across Tokyo and surrounding prefectures had been issued as of 3 p.m. local time (0600 GMT), according to NTV, citing the Fire and Disaster Management Agency.

Typhoon Dujuan comes amid a year of extreme weather events around the world, with unusually intense rainfall, flooding and tropical cyclones affecting regions from East Asia to North America and Europe.
