At least five people died after the cargo plane overran the runway and crashed while landing at Miami International Airport on Sunday (September 6), local officials said.

''At approximately 1:58 p.m. (1758 GMT) this afternoon, a cargo plane crashed at Miami International Airport as it overran the runway number 30. It came to rest at a field adjacent to the airport. At this time, we can confirm that we have at least five deceased individuals, and we have multiple individuals that were transported to local hospitals with unknown injuries.''

''Earlier today, we know that the Prime Air Flight 7598 overran the runway. And now we know that five people lost their lives and five others were injured. My heart is with all of the families who were affected. And to everyone who is grieving tonight. And we're also praying for the injured and for their families. And I want to thank the men and women of our fire rescue team, of our sheriff's office. I want to thank all the first responders. Our fire rescue team was there within seconds of the crash.''

Eyewitness video showed emergency vehicles parked at the plane's tail and emergency crews dousing the cargo plane. Reuters was able to confirm the location and date of the footage from metadata on original file. Fence, light poles and airfield layout also matched archive imagery of the area.

Amazon was still gathering details about what happened, company spokesperson Kelly Nantel said. "We're working closely with local authorities and officials to understand exactly what happened," Nantel said in a statement. “So my girlfriend's going back to London Heathrow and we were checking in and suddenly she's like, cancel all, suspend all check-ins. And we were wondering like what was going on. And then she came around and she's like, the reason why is an Amazon aircraft had overstepped or went over the runway and it went past the gates and crashed. It was fire and everything. And yeah, that's the reason. They said that there's no planes allowed to come back in here. So the planes can't come back in here. Therefore, they have to go out. And the one that she was going to go on was now stuck in Orlando.”
