Buenos Aires (Argentina)

A gathering of Argentina supporters at Buenos Aires' Obelisk after their team’s 1-0 World Cup final defeat to Spain turned violent on Sunday (July 19) when groups of people started throwing stones and bottles at police.

The clashes forced closures on the main thoroughfares in the area. Authorities have not confirmed any injuries or arrests.

Argentina President Javier Milei announced on social media that his government would declare a national holiday to honour the team's runners-up finish, with the date to be set once players and coaching staff decide when to hold celebrations.
