STORY: Pope Leo travelled to the eastern Angolan city of Saurimo on Monday (April 20) as part of his visit to Angola, leaving the capital Luanda early in the morning for a series of religious and pastoral events.

In Saurimo, the pontiff is scheduled to visit a local nursing home before presiding over a Holy Mass at the Saurimo esplanade.

After the Mass, Leo will return to Luanda in the afternoon, where he was expected to conclude the day with a meeting with bishops, priests and pastoral workers at the Parish of Our Lady of Fatima, delivering an address.

Angola is one of sub‑Saharan Africa’s leading oil producers, but much of its population of about 36.6 million people continues to face extreme poverty, with more than 30% living on less than $2.15 a day, according to the World Bank. More than half of Angolans identify as Catholic.

Leo is visiting Angola on the third leg of a four‑nation tour of Africa. In a speech to the country’s political leaders over the weekend, he criticised the exploitation of natural resources on the continent.
