SHOWS: Colombian right-wing candidate Abelardo De La Espriella has clinched a narrow victory in Sunday's (June 21) presidential election, according to an initial ballot count, as voters bet on his Donald Trump-endorsed promise of a crackdown on crime and a stronger economy.

De La Espriella said he will govern for all Colombians after winning the presidency, narrowly defeating leftist Ivan Cepeda and winning over a majority of voters with a promise to restore security and revive the economy, according to the preliminary count by the National Registry. Colombian voters headed to the polls on Sunday for a presidential runoff that will determine whether the country continues on its left-leaning path or joins Latin America's rightward shift by electing a political outsider who has vowed to crack down on crime.

After a crowded first-round election produced no winner in May, voters will choose between two runoff candidates: leftist Senator Ivan Cepeda and Abelardo De La Espriella, a right-wing lawyer and businessman with no political experience.

Whoever wins will grapple with high public debt and a divided Congress, which could stymie reform proposals. (0936-COLOMBIA-ELECTION/POLLS OPENING)

Colombia's outgoing President Gustavo Petro cast his vote and said he would respect the final vote count once it is certified by the electoral judges.

Petro spoke at Bolivar Square in downtown Bogota to kick off election day, as he cast his vote at Congress.

The leader didn't accept the initial first-round vote count, which right-wing candidate Abelardo de la Espriella won, saying he would wait for final results reviewed by judges.

In a speech that officially kicked out the election day, Petro also rejected foreign countries' "interference" in the electoral process. (0943-COLOMBIA-ELECTION/PETRO)

De La Espriella, who is proposing ending talks with armed groups and carrying out a broad military offensive against them, and boosting Colombia's oil and gas sector, cast his vote in Barranquilla.

De La Espriella blames Petro for the country's economic and security woes and has vowed to lower taxes and reduce the size of the state by up to 40%, but has said he will preserve Petro's 23% increase in the minimum wage, along with other popular social measures. The Colombian ruling-coalition candidate, Cepeda, said he would recognise the runoff result after conducting "meticulous oversight" of the vote count, as he cast his vote. He also asked voters to behave peacefully on election day.

Cepeda, 63, is vowing to continue the policies of President Gustavo Petro, a former rebel and the country's first leftist president, which include state pension payments for the poor, union-backed labour reforms, peace talks with armed groups that have fought the state for decades and a moratorium on new oil projects. A polling station in Bogota closed at 4 p.m. (2100 GMT), with staff beginning the ballot count. Early results showed De La Espriella leading Colombia’s presidential race with 50.4% of the vote, with about a third of ballot boxes counted, according to data from the national registry office on Sunday.

Final, official results are expected in the coming days. (0944-COLOMBIA-ELECTION/POLLS CLOSING)
