"I hope people have some common sense and vote for Bolsonaro, because in fact, we've had this Workers' Party rule not for 20 years or 16 years, but we've had this left-wing politics for many years, since Fernando Henrique Cardoso. One lie after another, a succession of liars and people deceiving the Brazilian people."

4. (SOUNDBITE) (Portuguese) TEACHER, ROBERTA CAMPOS, SAYING:
"For me, voting means honouring the different people who throughout history fought to build a democratic society. Many people fought for it, many women fought to make women's suffrage possible. So that everyone in the population, without any discrimination based on gender, race or social status, could vote, whether they were literate or illiterate. That is democracy, and we have to honour this right, which is more than a right; it is a duty."
Polling stations closed across Brazil on Sunday at 5 p.m. local time (2000 GMT), ending the first round of the presidential election in Latin America's largest nation.

Supporters of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva gathered on the streets of Rio de Janeiro on Sunday to watch the vote count. Many chanted slogans and cheered as the results came in, making the letter "L" with their hands while they waited. Elsewhere in the city, people gathered in bars to follow the returns.

Brazilian Senator Flavio Bolsonaro advanced on Sunday to a presidential runoff against Lula, the incumbent, after taking roughly 47% of valid votes in the first round, defying expectations from most polling institutes. Addressing the media in Brasilia, Bolsonaro expressed confidence and vowed to fight for "Brazil's future" rather than power.

"What I have to say is that Lula is fighting for power. He has already contested seven presidential elections, seven presidential elections. He is concerned about power; I am concerned about Brazil's future. I am fighting for Brazil."
Supporters of Bolsonaro celebrated his stronger-than-expected first-round showing, which is likely to give his campaign a boost. Bolsonaro's father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, is serving a 27-year sentence for plotting a coup after losing the 2022 election. Bolsonaro faces Lula in the runoff on October 25.
