NATO defence ministers posed for a group photo, on Thursday (June 5), as they gathered in the Alliance's headquarters in Brussels to discuss defence spending.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte earlier announced that member states are expected to agree on what he called "historic" new capability targets.

Some minsters showed support also for a major boost in defence spending of 5% of gross domestic product (GDP) demanded by U.S. President Donald Trump.

In a bid to meet Trump's 5% goal, Rutte has proposed alliance members boost defence spending to 3.5% of GDP and commit a further 1.5% to broader security-related spending, Reuters has reported.

Details of the new investment plan will likely continue to be negotiated until the eve of the NATO summit in the Hague later in June.
