STORY: Eyewitness footage shot on Monday (July 14) and Wednesday (July 16) showed smoke and flames burning forested and mountainous areas in Newfoundland and Labrador, an eastern Canadian province on the Atlantic coast.

Reuters was able to independently verify the location by the pine trees, harbors and cabins which matched satellite imagery. Location also confirmed by the source. The date when the videos were filmed was verified by original file metadata and NASA FIRMS (Fire Information Resource Management system) that detected thermal activity near the area from Monday through Wednesday (July 14 - 16).

Canadian officials said at least seven fires are burning across Newfoundland and Labrador, with an unknown number of cabins destroyed and residents forced to flee.

According to Canadian media, the provincial Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture said the Chance Harbour wildfire remains contained at 1,200 hectares, with firefighting efforts focused on its southeastern section.
