STORY: Former Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner appeared on her balcony Wednesday (June 11) to greet supporters who gathered outside her Buenos Aires home, just one day after Argentina's top court upheld her six-year prison sentence for corruption.

Waving enthusiastically to the crowd below, Kirchner, 72, acknowledged the outpouring of support following Tuesday's (June 10) controversial ruling that confirmed her 2022 conviction for fraud related to public road projects in Patagonia that were allegedly steered to a close ally during her 2007-2015 presidency.

Across Plaza de Mayo Square, additional supporters staged protests against the court's decision, carrying banners with photos of Supreme Court judges labeled "Corrupt court, Puppets of economic power."

Kirchner, a two-term president from 2007-2015 and a senator and vice president from 2019-2023, faces the possibility of jail time. She will likely be able to push for house arrest because of her age, 72, and the court will decide within five working days whether to grant that request.

But she will not be able to run as a legislative candidate in the midterm elections in the province of Buenos Aires, a Peronist stronghold, as she had planned.
