A Russian drone strike killed at least 14 people on a crowded rail platform in the Ukrainian city of Dnipro on Thursday (October 29) and five people in daytime strikes on other cities, officials said, even as a local truce in Kherson raised cautious hopes for a resumption of diplomacy.

Reuters video showed police officers covering bodies on a train platform, and later air raid sirens sounded at the site.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, responding to the "horrific" strike on Dnipro, urged Kyiv's partners to boost pressure on Russia, which has stepped up attacks in recent months on Ukrainian cities.

State rail company Ukrzaliznytsia said a jet-powered drone had struck a platform at Dnipro's main station, where a commuter train was preparing to depart for the nearby city of Zaporizhzhia.

Intensifying Russian drone and missile attacks, including on the country's rail network, have damaged critical infrastructure and hurt the economy as fighting grinds on.

"I am simply lost for words with outrage. Why? Why on earth did Russia, that occupier, those bloody invaders, attack the civilian passengers on the commuter train? Why? What do the people have to do with this? And anyway, I don’t understand, I just don’t understand… People are travelling: some to visit friends, some to work, some… Life, as it were, goes on, and what’s the point of this? What aim are they pursuing? It’s not clear."

"Actually, when I was standing by the minibus in Pavlohrad (town in Dnipropetrovsk region), the children rang me, saying, 'Mum, this and that happened.' And I said, 'That's it, I'm not going – but I've got a return ticket.' 'No, I'll go; whatever God wills, I'll go.' So that's what I decided; of course, it's very, very scary, but I’m not panicking."
