Britain's Prime Minister Andy Burnham and French President Emmanuel Macron met for talks at Downing Street on Thursday (September 3).

The leaders were expected to discuss migrant crossings, Ukraine and UK-EU relations, the UK government said in a press release.

Macron began his trip to London on Wednesday (September 2), with a visit alongside King Charles to the exhibition housing the historic Bayeux Tapestry, the nearly 1,000-year-old embroidery which depicts the conquest of England by the monarch's ancestor William I in 1066.

Under a deal struck with the French government, the 70-metre (230-foot) Tapestry has been loaned to the British Museum from its home in northern France and brought to English soil for the first time since it was made.

BURNHAM: "I'm very pleased today to welcome my first overseas visitor as Prime Minister. And it's so fitting that it is our nearest neighbour and close friend, Emmanuel. On behalf of everyone here, Monsieur Le Président, can I thank you for your huge personal gesture of goodwill, trust and friendship with Britain in allowing the Bayeux Tapestry to be displayed here. It will, I think I'm certain saying this, it will lift so many lives, and particularly as we both saw last night, the lives of children who learn about this tapestry in school as I did and so many of us did when we were young. It shows what collaboration can achieve. Just as we are also showing on Ukraine, on small boats, and also on strengthening the UK-EU relationship. So I look forward to discussing those themes further with you today. But can I just say, you are so welcome to Downing Street, and we're so pleased to have you with us today.

MACRON: Thank you for your words, and it is welcome, and I'm very happy to be here with you. I think this is a very important moment for the bilateral relation indeed, with this loan and the beginning, the opening of this exhibition. We understood yesterday that one million visitors would have the opportunity to see the history and better understand our common history. And for me, it's a great achievement. But this is the best evidence level of this very special relation we have between our two countries. And this is being here as the opportunity as well to discuss a lot of bilateral topics from defence and security, to energy and economy, migration, et cetera, and as well to speak about our common commitments with Ukraine and for security of our continent and outside the Ukrainian people, and as well in our common view on the Middle East and the common initiative we took one year ago, and we will follow up some new initiatives in the Middle East and elsewhere. But this very strong relationship for me is extremely important, and I'm here with willingness and the commitment to get closer and closer."
