Londoners shared their views on Thursday (September 17) on the disagreement between the palace and Diana’s brother over allegations made in his soon-to-be published book.

The assertions relate to the now-monarch's conduct in the days after Diana's death in 1997. Diana's brother, Charles Spencer, alleges that the then-Prince Charles told him "rest assured, we'll forget her soon enough," according to a report in the Daily Mail.

Britain's King Charles took the unusual step on Wednesday (September 16) of responding to Spencer's criticism, saying via a spokesperson that grief could impact reason, judgement and memory.

"It's such a long time ago. Can people really remember what was said?" retired British resident Nicky said, adding that "it's just sad."

Sales executive James Taylor said he thought the Palace's response was probably anticipated, because "they've got to defend their legacy."

"I think, also from a selling book perspective, being cynical, you could argue that...it's always going to be denied and it's never provable," he added.

Asked about the report, a Buckingham Palace spokesperson said: "While we do not comment on books as a matter of principle, His Majesty is mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgement and colour memory in ways others do not recognise, even many years after such a loss."

Prior to the book's release, Spencer said: "The aim of this book is to tell the truth about Diana from her brother's perspective ... I want to speak on Diana's behalf and do so in an openly positive way."
