J064-PORTUGAL INCENDIOS FORESTALES
Drone footage showed on Thursday (August 21) the effects of the massive wildfires that raged in the Iberian Peninsula for weeks.
In Unhais da Serra, central Portugal, the drone showed scorched land and some flames burning vegetation.
Portugal Economy Manuel Castro said on Thursday that victims of the wildfires could receive five times more compensation than in 2024, adding that the government is not ruling out a disaster situation yet, but considering it, local media said.
In Portugal, wildfires have burned about 216,200 hectares so far this year, according to EFFIS - more than four times the 2006-2024 average for this period - and two people have died.
