J063-EEUU FIGURA FRANCOTIRADOR
A figure on a rooftop appeared to be seen in footage of the moment the crowd ducked during the fatal shooting of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk on Wednesday (September 10).
Reuters was able to confirm that the figure, seen in the video, was on the roof of the Losee Center at Utah Valley University.
The position of the figure matches the one seen in other corroborating footage posted on social media.
Utah’s Department of Public Safety said that they believe shooter fired from “the roof of a building that is down to the location of the public event in the student courtyard".
The location where the figure is seen, on the roof of Losee Center, is approximately 130 metres from where Charlie Kirk was. Reuters was not able to independently verify that the figure seen on the roof is the shooter.
The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said in a press release on Thursday the shooter who killed influential conservative activist Charlie Kirk fired from a nearby roof during a public event at Utah Valley University.
Police and U.S. federal agents said on Thursday they had found the bolt-action rifle they believed was used to Kirk, but were still hunting the shooter.
Kirk, a 31-year-old podcast-radio commentator and a close ally of U.S. President Donald Trump, is credited with helping build the Republican Party's support among younger voters. He was killed on Wednesday by a single gunshot in what Utah Governor Spencer Cox called a political assassination.
The killing, captured in graphic detail in videos that rapidly spread around the internet, occurred as Kirk spoke onstage at an outdoor event called "Prove Me Wrong" in front of about 3,000 people at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, about 40 miles (65 km) south of Salt Lake City.
The killer arrived on campus a few minutes before the event began, and could be seen on security-camera video ascending stairwells to get onto a nearby roof before firing a single shot, according to the FBI and state officials.
The shooter jumped off the roof and fled into an adjoining neighbourhood, Robert Bohls, the FBI special agent in charge, told reporters. Investigators found a "high-powered, bolt-action" rifle in a nearby wooded area, and were examining that along with palm prints and footprints for clues.
