“We don't want to leave early, do we? We got to finish the job, right? Over the past 11 days, our military has virtually destroyed Iran. Tough country. Their air force is gone, totally gone. That took the better part of about 3 hours. They no longer have radar. They don't have anti-aircraft equipment. They don't have anything. Their missiles are down 90%. Their drones are down 85%. We're blowing up the factories where they're made left and right.”

Sirens sounded across Jerusalem in the early hours of Thursday (March 12) and explosions were heard, as the U.S. and Israel traded air strikes with Iran across the Middle East.

Iranian explosive-laden boats appear to have attacked two fuel tankers in Iraqi waters setting them ablaze and killing one crew member on Wednesday (March 11), after projectiles struck three vessels in Gulf waters, said port, maritime security and risk firms.

Reuters confirmed that one of the ships seen in the videos is tanker Zefyros by the shape and characteristics which matched file imagery of the vessel. The exact time when the videos were filmed could not be verified but no older version of the footage was found posted online before March 12. Vessel tracking data puts the location of the tankers Zefyros and Safesea Vishnu in Iraqi territorial waters on March 12, 2026. Iraqi News Agency cited a statement from the State Organization for Marketing of Oil (SOMO) confirming the tankers Safesea Vishnu and Zefyros were hit while they were present in the ship-to-ship loading area within Iraqi territorial waters. Reuters confirmed with two Iraqi port officials on names of vessels.

The IEA's decision to release 400 million barrels of oil from global strategic reserves has already had a "strong impact" on energy markets, which are in an "extremely critical period" after the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, its Executive Director Fatih Birol said on Thursday (March 12).

The International Energy Agency's coordinated move in the face of the Iran war was aimed to stabilise oil markets, Birol said at an Istanbul press conference.

"In particular, the closure of the Strait of Hormuz has caused serious problems in the global oil and natural gas markets. To help resolve these problems, the International Energy Agency, as I announced in a press conference, began releasing 400 million barrels of oil into the markets yesterday. This is an extremely important issue."

Shares fell in Asia on Thursday (March 12) as oil prices jumped on reports that more ships had been struck in the Strait of Hormuz and in Iraqi waters, fuelling inflation and pushing borrowing costs higher worldwide.
