J058-PAKISTAN EVACUADOS LLUVIAS
Torrential monsoon rains triggered heavy flooding in the eastern city of Sialkot in Pakistan's Punjab province on Thursday (August 28), inundating the city and surrounding areas.
The sudden surge sent riverine floodwaters coursing through streets and communities, prompting authorities to issue high-alert flood warnings across the critical region.
India on Wednesday (August 27) opened all gates of major dams on rivers in its part of the Kashmir region following heavy rains, and warned neighbouring Pakistan of the possibility of downstream flooding, an Indian government source said.
Pakistani officials stated that Punjab, the nation's breadbasket home to half of its 240 million people, faces an "exceptionally high" risk of flooding from the combined effect of heavy local rains and the excess water released from Indian dams.
The country has battled the monsoon season for weeks, with more than 167,000 people already displaced in Punjab, including 40,000 who left voluntarily after flood warnings were first issued on August 14.
