J057-UCRANIA ATAQUE MASIVO RUSO
CCTV footage captured the moment Russian forces struck Kyiv during a large-scale overnight drone and missile attack on Thursday (August 28).
The attack killed at least 15 people including four children and injured 38, and damaged residential and other buildings across seven districts, Ukrainian officials said.
Explosions were seen and heard over the Ukrainian capital in the early hours of Thursday, as air raid sirens blared.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said the attack, which also killed a child, showed the world Russia's answer to diplomacy amid efforts by U.S. President Donald Trump to end the war.
Reuters was able to confirm the location from the position of buildings and the road layout, which matched satellite imagery and footage filmed by Reuters. The date was verified by the time stamp on the video. Ukrainian officials on Thursday said Russian forces launched a large-scale overnight drone and missile attack on Kyiv.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Thursday (August 28) that an overnight deadly attack on Kyiv showed Russia’s answer to diplomacy.
“Russia chooses ballistics instead of the negotiating table,” he said in a post on social media platform X, adding that the assault killed at least eight people including a child.
Zelenskiy said that “dozens of opportunities” for diplomacy had been ruined, and that “Russia must feel accountable for every strike, for every day of this war”. (0306-UKRAINE-CRISIS/ATTACK-KYIV-ZELENSKIY)

“Right now in Kyiv, first responders are clearing the rubble of an ordinary residential building after a Russian strike. Another massive attack against our cities and communities. Killings again. Tragically, at least 8 people have already been confirmed dead. One of them is a child. My condolences to all their families and loved ones.” / “People may still be trapped under the rubble. Dozens are wounded. These Russian missiles and attack drones today are a clear response to everyone in the world who, for weeks and months, has been calling for a ceasefire and for real diplomacy. Russia chooses ballistics instead of the negotiating table. It chooses to continue killing instead of ending the war. And this means that Russia still does not fear the consequences. Russia still takes advantage of the fact that at least part of the world turns a blind eye to murdered children and seeks excuses for Putin.” / “We expect a reaction from China to what is going on. China has repeatedly called for not expanding the war and for a ceasefire. Yet this is not happening because of Russia. We expect a reaction from Hungary. The death of children should definitely stir far greater emotions than anything else. We expect a response from everyone in the world who has called for peace but now more often stays silent rather than taking principled positions.” / “And it is definitely time for new, tough sanctions against Russia for everything it is doing. All deadlines have already been broken, dozens of opportunities for diplomacy ruined. Russia must feel accountable for every strike, for every day of this war. Eternal memory to all victims of Russia!”

It was only lifted when the emergency services came, they used a lift. But she was not saved."

37. (SOUNDBITE) (English) PRESIDENT OF THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION, URSULA VON DER LEYEN, SAYING (PARTLY OVERLAPPED BY STILLS IN SHOT 39 SHOWING DAMAGES TO THE EU DELEGATION BUILDING):
"I'm outraged by the attack on Kyiv, also hitting our EU offices. This was the deadliest drone and missile attack on the capital since July. And as you can see behind me on the screen, it was an attack also on our delegation. I just spoke with our deputy ambassador, and I'm relieved that none of our staff were harmed. Last night's attack struck in close proximity to the diplomatic mission, the representation of our union. Two missiles hit at a distance of 50 meters from the delegation within 20 seconds. And this is another grim reminder of what is at stake. It shows that the Kremlin will stop at nothing to terrorize Ukraine, blindly killing civilians: men, women, and children, and even targeting the European Union."

"We will come forward soon with our 19th package of hard-fighting sanctions. And in parallel, we are advancing the work on the Russian frozen assets to contribute to Ukraine's defence and reconstruction."
