J056-SUIZA TRUMP SOBRE GROENLANDIA

DAVOS (SUIZA)

STORY: President Donald Trump said on Thursday (January 22) he had secured total and permanent U.S. access to Greenland in a deal with NATO, whose head said allies would have to step up their commitment to Arctic security to ward off threats from Russia and China.

News of a framework deal came as Trump backed off tariff threats and ruled out taking Greenland by force, bringing a degree of respite in what was brewing to be the biggest rupture in transatlantic ties in decades.

But the details of any agreement were unclear and Denmark insisted its sovereignty over the island was not up for discussion. Denmark's foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Trump's latest comments.

Trump's U-turn had triggered a rebound in European markets but also raised questions about how much damage had already been done to transatlantic ties and business confidence.

Trump's ambition to wrest sovereignty over Greenland from fellow NATO member Denmark has threatened to blow apart the alliance that underpinned Western security since the end of World War Two, and reignite a trade war with Europe.

1. (SOUNDBITE) (English) PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP, SAYING: (SOUNDBITE OVER VARIOUS SHOTS OF TRUMP DURING INTERVIEW)

JOURNALIST: "So what are we talking about? An acquisition of Greenland? Are you going to pay for it?

TRUMP: "We're talking about that, it's really being negotiated now, the details of it. But essentially it's total access. It's, there's no end. There's no time limit. We're not doing a 99 or a ten year or anything else. You know, the famous 99 year deals that you hear about because countries can't do it, for that, countries go on longer. And so I think it's going to be something that's very well, already it's being reviewed very well. Well, I noticed the stock market went up very substantial only after we announced it. But the details are being negotiated now. It'll be very good."

2. (SOUNDBITE) (English) PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP, SAYING: (SOUNDBITE OVER VARIOUS SHOTS OF INTERVIEW)

JOURNALIST: "Because the GDP of Greenland is like $3.3 billion, but people are valuing Greenland at between 50 billion and almost a trillion. So what are you willing to pay for Greenland?"

TRUMP: "Well, I'm not going to have to pay anything. We're going to have total access to Greenland. We're going to have all military access that we want. We're going to be able to put what we need on Greenland because we want it. We're talking about national security and international security. So we're going to not have to pay anything other than the fact that we are building the the golden dome. And the golden dome is going to be something that's going to be very amazing. It'll be Israel times probably 100. And we need it. I think we need it. And it's all going to be made in the United States."
