“Today, I had an in-depth exchange of views with President Trump on China-US relations as well as the international and regional situation. We agreed that: China-U.S. relations are the most important bilateral relationship in the world today. They can only be handled well and must not be messed up. When the two countries cooperate, both benefit; when they fight, both suffer. They should be partners, not adversaries. We agree to build a constructive and strategically stable China-US relationship, promote the stable, healthy, and sustainable development of bilateral ties, and bring more peace, prosperity, and progress to the world.“

23. (SOUNDBITE) (Mandarin) TAIWAN MAINLAND AFFAIRS COUNCIL DEPUTY MINISTER, LIANG WEN-CHIEH, SAYING:
"We would like to emphasise that, while Xi Jinping has said that the independence of Taiwan is the greatest risk to peace in the Taiwan Strait. However, in Taiwan, the primary objective pursued by the public is to maintain the existing status quo of the Republic of China. This is the broadest consensus among the Taiwanese people. At present, the greatest risk to peace in the Taiwan Strait lies in the Chinese Communist Party’s intention to undermine this status quo and to disrupt the continued existence of the Republic of China. That, in fact, is where the real risk to peace in the Strait currently resides. We hope that, if there is genuine concern for peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, the Chinese Communist Party should first scale back its military intimidation against Taiwan. Thank you."
Xi told Trump at the start of a two-day summit on Thursday that trade talks were making progress, but warned that disagreements over Taiwan could send relations down a dangerous path and even lead to conflict.

24. CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTRY SPOKESPERSON, GUO JIAKUN, ARRIVING FOR NEWS CONFERENCE
25. (SOUNDBITE) (Mandarin) CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTRY SPOKESPERSON, GUO JIAKUN, SAYING:
"In his talks with U.S. President Donald Trump, President Xi Jinping pointed out that the Taiwan question is the most important issue in China-U.S. relations. If it is handled properly, the bilateral relationship will enjoy overall stability. Otherwise, the two countries will have clashes and even conflicts, putting the entire relationship in great jeopardy. 'Taiwan independence' and cross-Strait peace are as irreconcilable as fire and water. Maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait represents the greatest common ground between China and the U.S. The U.S. side must handle the Taiwan issue with the utmost prudence."
Taiwanese residents have voiced mixed reactions on Thursday (May 14) ahead of the bilateral meeting in Beijing between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

"I think this (Donald Trump and Xi Jinping meeting) is definitely something to be concerned about. It has a very significant impact on Taiwan. So the question is, will the United States—will Trump—ultimately betray Taiwan? I think this is absolutely crucial. For Taiwan, it’s extremely important. Basically, I don’t really trust Trump."

30. (SOUNDBITE) (Mandarin) MS. CHEN (WISHING NOT TO GIVE FIRST NAME), RETIREE FROM TAINAN, SAYING:
"It’s a good thing to be able to sit down and talk through differing views and opinions (for Donald Trump and Xi Jinping meeting). As we ethnic Chinese people say, people tend to show a measure of goodwill once they meet face to face, so meeting in person is a very positive thing. I don’t see anything wrong with it. In fact, not all changes are necessarily decided by these two leaders alone. In a democratic system, decisions are made through democratic processes. So I don’t think this is something that requires too much attention or concern."
Beijing residents expressed cautious hopes on Thursday (May 14) that talks between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping would help stabilise ties between the world's two largest economies, while voicing concern over Trump's unpredictable style.
