SHOWS: Kyiv’s skyline was set ablaze as Russian ballistic missiles struck the Ukrainian capital early Thursday (August 20).

The strike killed at least 16 people, left dozens injured, damaged buildings and left parts of the city without power, authorities said.

People were trapped in one residential building and fires broke out in multiple locations, while non-residential facilities, warehouses and a children's hospital were also hit, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said.

A Reuters witness reported hearing more than a dozen explosions.

A fire broke out after Russia attacked the upper floors of a nine-storey residential building, Klitschko said, and people were trapped in another place as Moscow hit non-residential and apartment facilities, warehouses and a children's hospital.

Reuters was able to independently confirm the location of the video. Date of the video was verified by local officials.

A woman wailed as rescuers carried the body of her grandson from a missile-damaged apartment block in Kyiv. Before the body was brought from the building, the woman spoke with a neighbour, identifying the victim as her grandson and saying relatives had been in contact with him.

Moments later, rescuers carried the body out on a stretcher as the woman followed behind. She stood beside the body after it was placed on the ground, crying in grief before medics moved in to support her.
