Body cam footage showed firefighters tackling the flames in a wildfire in Turkey's southern Mersin province, as the flames burned for a second day on Thursday (August 14) after destroying many homes overnight.

The fire began in a forest area in the Silifke district of Mersin on Wednesday (August 13) and prompted the evacuation of six villages and five hamlets. It destroyed several homes overnight, despite firefighters' continuous efforts to contain it.

The strong winds and low humidity in the area were making efforts more difficult, Mayor Vahap Secer said on Thursday, as he visited villages where homes were damaged. The municipality said 70% homes in two villages were burnt, while 190 people were placed in temporary housing after the evacuations.

Overnight video showed houses engulfed in flames while firefighters doused them. The facades of the houses were charred, windows broken and the gardens burned. Helicopters joined the effort in daytime, dropping water from the air as firefighters resumed operations from the ground.
