SHOWS: South Korea is in the grip of its worst heat wave on record, and public servants like Hwang Han-jae are now patrolling farm fields from the sky.

Hwang operates a drone which broadcasts a message through its loudspeaker: "The weather is extremely hot. Please drink plenty of water while outdoors and take breaks in the cooling shelter."

The drones are part of measures the South Korean province of North Gyeongsang are taking to protect its farmers, many of whom are elderly, and to curb heat-related illnesses.

The province built the drone surveillance system in 2023 originally to monitor wildlife in partnership with the Korea Forest Service.

Typhoon Dolphin is expected to continue tracking westward on Thursday (August 6), according to forecasts by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

Saudi Arabia's annual ban on outdoor work during the hottest hours of the day has taken on renewed importance as summer temperatures reached as high as 50 degrees Celsius (122 Fahrenheit) earlier in July, according to the National Center for Meteorology.

Authorities warned of rising temperatures and increasingly volatile weather across the kingdom.

The seasonal restriction has been in place for more than a decade barring workers from outdoor jobs in direct sunlight between 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. starting June 15 until September 15.

From Rome’s sun-baked piazzas to Milan’s business districts, Italians faced another punishing day of heat on Thursday (August 6) as the Health Ministry placed all 27 cities in its monitoring system under the highest-level alert for the first time this year.

A red alert means prolonged extreme temperatures may pose a serious health risk to the entire population, including young and healthy people, rather than only elderly or vulnerable residents.
