J051-ITALIA RESCATE INMIGRANTES
The Sea-Watch 5 rescue ship arrived on Thursday morning (August 14) at the Italian port of Salerno, carrying more than 70 migrants rescued in the Mediterranean in two operations.
After the arrival, due to some suspected cases of smallpox, some of the people on board the German charity ship have been placed in quarantine pending test results and will be later transferred to specialised centres.
According to UNHCR data, although arrivals by sea in Europe fell by 24% in 2024, reaching 200,000 people, the number of deaths and missing persons remained high. UNHCR estimated that at least 3,500 people lost their lives or disappeared on the various sea routes to Spain, Italy, Malta, Greece and Cyprus in 2024.
