Japan's chief cabinet secretary Minoru Kihara told reporters at a daily briefing on Thursday that the death toll from the earthquake in Japan has risen to 28, including deaths being investigated in relation to the disaster.

Footage released by Japan's Fire and Disaster Management Agency on Thursday showed rescuers at the stricken paper mill in Yatsushiro lifting a person onto a stretcher. A second video, released on Wednesday (July 29) showed teams picking through rubble at the Aeon shopping mall.

Nippon TV shot aerial footage on Thursday showing rescue operations under way at the collapsed Aeon shopping mall in Kashima, Kumamoto Prefecture, two days after a powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck southern Japan. The footage also showed part of a wall at the historic Kumamoto Castle reduced to rubble.

Sports bar owner Yusuke Hashimoto was seen clearing broken bottles and sports memorabilia he had collected over the years at his bar in Uki. Like much of the city, the bar was still without power.

Hashimoto estimates he lost about 3 million yen, $18,351, in inventory, plus weeks of lost business. The part-time propane vendor said it could take at least two months to reopen.

Still photographs taken on Wednesday showed buildings, expressways and a paper mill severely damaged in Kumamoto Prefecture. The Kumamoto prefectural government said the death toll from the earthquake was now at 25 with nine other deaths in the prefecture being investigated to ascertain if they were linked to the quake.

Two days after a powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake tore through southern Japan, the Shimada family's daily routine now revolves around water. On Thursday parents Yuka and Hirosuke Shimada collected water supplies from an emergency distribution station in Yatsushiro. The water is enough for essential needs, but not enough to restore the rhythms of normal life. There are no showers, no flushable toilets, and washing dishes has become a carefully rationed task.
