Heavy rainstorms swept across Greece on Wednesday (October 29) causing flooding in parts of the mainland and islands.

In the coastal fishing village of Platania in the region of south Pelion in central Thassaly, some 60 kilometers from the city of Volos, streets disappeared and homes flooded forcing authorities to send an emergency alert to residents. Other villages in the region were also affected by the strong downpour.

Residents called on rescue teams from the fire brigade to assist them in being transported across flooded streets in boats, the fire brigade said.

The local south Pelion mayor Michalis Mitzikos said some six homes had been left without water while several roads had been blocked or damaged by floodwaters, cutting off passage.

In nearby Volos, floodwater cascaded down main streets as rains lashed down.

Authorities had sent warnings to be on alert for heavy rains across Greece, with floods also reported on the islands of Skiathos and Symi.
