STORY: Syrian across the country celebrated Christmas on Thursday (December 25) by attending Mass and hoping for peace and stability.

In Damascus, the Syriac Church Scouts played Christmas melodies in the streets, guarded by Syrian security forces members.

"Holidays are held normally and people are relieved to some extent and things are better by God's will," said Doctor Youssef Abdalki, a resident of the capital.

In Aleppo and Qamishli, people attended mass and prayed for freedom and peace.

Christians made up around 10% of Syria's pre-war population of 22 million, but their numbers shrunk significantly during the conflict, mainly through emigration. Only a few hundred thousand are now estimated to be living in Syria.
