J008-MEXICO VUELTA A NORMALIDAD GUADALAJARA

26 de febrero 2026 - 11:17

Guadalajara, México

STORY: Schools and businesses in Guadalajara reopened on Wednesday (February 25) as residents attempted to return to routine life, though fear lingered amid a visible security presence following cartel violence after the death of suspected drug trafficker Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as "El Mencho."

Vehicles streamed toward school gates as students filed into classrooms. The government of Jalisco state instructed basic, middle and high schools to hold classes as normal, with the option of switching back to virtual learning if security conditions deteriorate, teacher Vicente Reynoso said.

Traffic built up at major intersections and buses ran along their usual routes, but residents described a tense return to daily life after the unrest.

"I'm very nervous," said Cinthia Olivares, a Guadalajara resident. "I trust that life has to go on, but there's still a fear of not knowing what might happen on the street and having to run, hide and be vulnerable."

National Guard personnel patrolled the city in vehicles as some damage remained visible, including a vandalized gym and signs of destruction at a shopping center and supermarket.

"One hundred percent unsafe, you can't live like this," said merchant Jorge Cazal, arguing that arrests alone would not end the violence.

The wave of violence began on Sunday (February 22) after Oseguera died following a military operation in Jalisco, triggering roadblocks and vehicle fires across several states. Authorities have reported a gradual reduction in blockades as security forces continue patrols.

At least 62 people were killed in an early Sunday raid and in subsequent violence, authorities said, including 25 National Guard military police officers and 34 suspected gang members.
