Aerial footage from Nippon TV on Thursday (July 30), showed broken bridges, cracked roads and a damaged paper mill, while rescue crews worked amid collapsed buildings after a 7.1-magnitude earthquake hit southern Japan.

Two days after the quake, about 58,000 households in Kumamoto were still without water or power, officials said.

The Kumamoto prefectural government said the death toll from the earthquake was now at 17 - with most of the deaths occurring at Nippon Paper Industries' mill, which suffered major structural damage, and at an Aeon shopping mall where a possible gas explosion happened. Six more people were in cardiopulmonary arrest.

While rescue and relief efforts continue, a Kumamoto official warned of heatstroke risk in temperatures that were forecast to reach close to 40 C on the weekend. The Self-Defense Forces (SDF) —Japan's military — is installing about 300 air-conditioning units in evacuation centres and other key sites around Kumamoto.
