J007-VENEZUELA BOMBEROS CHILENOS RESCATE HERNAN

02 de julio 2026 - 11:31

La Guaira, Venezuela

Chilean firefighters found a survivor of last week's devastating earthquakes in Venezuela's Guaira on Monday (June 29) evening.

Footage provided by the USAR team showed a rescuer asking the man trapped under the rubble to move his hand.

USAR official Exequiel Gallardo told Reuters on Wednesday (July 1) that rescuers located the man using acoustic detection equipment and a fiber-optic camera.

Last week's quakes have killed 2,295, according to government figures published on Wednesday.

An unofficial but widely used list of the missing stands at 40,567. A United Nations envoy this week said it was procuring 10,000 body bags for Venezuela and the USGS has estimated more than 10,000 deaths were possible due to the quakes.

On the 29th, at around 8:00 p.m., we were able to make visual contact. I don't know if you saw the footage showing that we managed to see a hand, which also confirmed the accuracy of the location our team had determined through triangulation. We used that access point to drill through and inserted a fiber-optic camera. We then fed a line through, a small tube, through which our chief medical officer began giving the person water. The person tolerated the water well and, not only that, was also able to urinate."

"The person is still trapped inside the structure. None of his body parts are pinned; you could say he is in something like a coffin. However, he is in stable condition because we have been able to keep him hydrated. We have also given him electrolyte solution and some caloric intake as well. For now, everything is being provided in liquid form."

8. (SOUNDBITE)(Spanish) OFFICIAL OF CHILEAN FIREFIGHTERS’ “USAR” TEAM EXEQUIEL GALLARDO, SAYING:

"We are now at the stage where the remaining rescues are the most difficult. During the first 24 hours, about 80% of rescues are carried out. Those rescues are not conducted by international teams, they are carried out by first responders and by local residents themselves. People go in, help those trapped, and rescue them.

From roughly the 25th hour to the 72nd hour, the rescues become more complex. That's when international rescue teams like ours come in to assist, carrying out breaching operations and accessing victims who are not as easy to reach. After the 72nd hour, the rescues become extremely difficult. After the fifth day, they are even referred to as 'miracle rescues.' It is very rare to find people alive after so many days, yet we are still here working to rescue this trapped person."

"We hope to have good news within the next 24 hours. However, as I mentioned, this is a highly complex rescue operation. The outcome remains uncertain, we cannot say for certain how it will end, but we are working with the utmost professionalism to achieve the best possible result."
