Peru unveiled a Popemobile on Wednesday (November 4) ahead of Pope Leo XIV’s visit to the country this month for an intense three-country tour of South America.

The vehicle, adapted from a Chevrolet Colorado platform with a 360-degree rotating seat and a safety railing for the pontiff, was presented by General Motors Peru country manager Diego Novoa, who said it would let millions of Peruvians see the pope safely.

The vehicle unveiled on Wednesday is a Chevrolet off-road truck weighing about three tonnes, with two rows of seats removed to make room for the papal dome. It is decorated with the white and yellow Holy See flags and the papal coat of arms.

Cardinal Pedro Barreto blessed the vehicle at a ceremony at the Apostolic Nunciature in Lima, where Nuncio Paolo Gualtieri said the pope would soon be travelling through the city’s streets.

"This vehicle is a Chevrolet Colorado platform that has been specially adapted to the needs and technical specifications that the Vatican gave us. It is a vehicle that has, for example, two rows of seats which have been removed; as you can see, it only has the main cabin in order to adapt the entire dome area where the Pope will be able to sit. We have a special seat that rotates 360 degrees so that the Pope can greet everyone and also stand comfortably and safely with a special railing to hold on to."
